It is beneficial for every patient to see our hygienists. Our dental hygienists can guide you to better oral health by demonstrating proper tooth cleaning techniques and helping you choose which home care devices will work best for you.
Dental cleanings involve removing bacterial plaque (soft, sticky film) and tartar (calculus) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time.
Your teeth are continually bathed in saliva. Your saliva contains calcium and other substances which help strengthen and protect the teeth. While this is a good thing, it also means that you tend to get a build-up of calcium deposits on your teeth. The purpose of your cleaning is to make sure that the surfaces of the teeth are clean and smooth. This smooth surface prevents bacteria from sticking to your teeth.
If the deposits are allowed to accumulate on the teeth, it will allow bacteria to thrive right next to your gums. Once that process begins it can quickly progress and cause serious dental issues. These can include infection, tooth mobility and tooth loss. Regular dental hygiene visits ensure that your teeth, gums and overall health are monitored and properly maintained throughout your life. You are always welcome to discuss your hygiene options with Dr. Hildebrand.
Night guards
A night guard is a removable clear dental appliance that is worn when you sleep to protect your teeth from the forces created by clenching and grinding. Night guards act as a barrier between your top and bottom teeth. They prevent wear of your teeth and the sensitivity created by clenching and grinding. They are also an excellent way to protect any crowns and bridges you may have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Night guards are fabricated with a durable and flexible acrylic. They are designed to last for very long time, but their longevity varies with the amount of biting forces you have.
We start by taking an impression of both your upper and lower teeth. These impressions are used to make a custom fit appliance for your top or bottom teeth.
Mouth (Sport) Guard
A mouth or sports guard is a custom removable dental appliance designed to be worn while participating in sports that have a high risk of dental trauma. A sports guard acts as a protective layer around your teeth. It absorbs some of the force that could otherwise result in damage to your teeth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sports guards are made from a heavy duty plastic. They can be made in a wide array of colours and can be made right at Fresh Dental.
We can remake sports guards for children whose teeth change due to the loss of baby teeth and the addition of permanent teeth. All that is required are a new set of tooth impressions.
If your sports guard fits you correctly, there are no dangers. If you are noticing that it is too tight to too loose, please bring it to us right away.
Sealants
A sealant is a thin coating placed into the deep grooves of healthy teeth to prevent decay from forming. Our team uses a special type of sealant that continuously releases a small amount of fluoride to make sure the tooth stays cavity free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sealants are often used in order to prevent decay on the biting surfaces of teeth.
A filling involves the removal of decayed tooth structure. No tooth structure is removed before a sealant is placed. The tooth is carefully cleaned and the sealant is simply added to protect the healthy tooth structure.
If a sealant is placed before decay starts there is no need for dental anaesthetic. The tooth is kept healthy under the sealants.
Sealants may fall out over time. If this happens, be sure to have a new one placed to prevent decay.
Excellent and diligent home care is another way to prevent decay from forming on the teeth.
