Tooth Whitening Options
Frequently Asked Questions
Dental insurance does not usually cover the cost of tooth whitening procedures.
Tooth whitening is not permanent. People who enjoy foods and beverages that cause staining (eg. red wine, blueberries, tea, coffee) may see the whiteness start to fade in as little as one month. Those who avoid foods and beverages that stain may be able to wait one year or longer before a touch up is needed.
Tooth whitening is very safe. Studies of tooth whitening products using 10% carbamide peroxide showed little to no effect on the hardness or mineral content of a tooth’s enamel surface.
Over 10 years of clinical use of tooth whitening products containing 10% carbamide peroxide have not shown any damage to existing fillings. However, keep in mind that existing restorations such as tooth coloured fillings, crowns, bonding, veneers, and bridges do not lighten. This means that any dental work you already have may need to be replaced to match the new white tooth shade.
If you have sensitive teeth we would advise you to proceed with caution. You may be able to use whitening products but perhaps not as frequently as a person who doesn’t experience sensitivity. Dr. Hildebrand can recommend special products to help with your sensitivity.
Whitening toothpastes typically only clean surface stains and don’t actually change the colour of the teeth.
veneers
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed on top of your teeth to enhance their appearance. Veneers can restore and even improve the appearance of your smile.
Frequently Asked Questions

Veneers can be a good colour match with your natural teeth, but less of a match as your natural teeth age.
- Whitening can be used to improve the appearance of your teeth.
- Dental bonding can sometimes be used to improve the appearance of your teeth
invisible braces
Invisible braces are custom tooth aligners made of a clear plastic material. A series of aligners move your teeth in the sequence determined by our dentists.
Frequently Asked Questions
They are not necessarily better, but they are less noticeable. They are a wonderful option for patients that might not otherwise pursue orthodontic treatment if they had to wear traditional braces.
Our dentists will help you determine whether you are a good candidate for invisible braces. If traditional braces are a better to choice for you, we would be pleased to refer you to an Orthodontist for a consultation.
Besides being nearly invisible, you are able to take your clear braces out to eat and drink. After brushing and flossing, you put them back in your mouth.
The risks are minimal if you wear your invisible braces and follow our instructions. It is important that if you pursue this treatment that you have good dental health.
